Under this vision, the Institute of Oceanography in SJTU was  established in 2013, and then transformed to the School of Oceanography in 2018  with the mission goals to conduct basic research in marine science and  technology, to seek solutions for environment protection, ecosystem conservation  and climate change mitigation, and to serve the public, nation and global  communities. The School of Oceanography is a joint venture between Shanghai  Jiao Tong University, the Ministry of Nature Resources Second Institute of  Oceanography and the Ministry of Nature Resources Polar Research Institute of  China.

The School of Oceanography offers Bachelor's, Master's and PhD degree  programs in marine science. The School currently has around 110 faculty and staff  members, and is enrolled approximately 150 and 300 undergraduate and graduate  students respectively. It possesses State Key Laboratory of Submarine Geoscience,Key Laboratory of Polar Ecosystem and Climate Change, Ministry of Education ,Shanghai Key Laboratory of Polar Life and Environment Sciences,Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of Polar Science and the Observation and Research Station for Marine Risk and Hazard Management at Daya Bay, Ministry of Natural Resources.

The School has received a number of international research and educational projects  in collaboration with institutions around the world, engaging in a wide range of  research activities from wetlands to deep ocean trenches, spanning from  equatorial to polar regions.
