Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the most prestigious Universities in China among the world's top 100 universities. Through more than one hundred years history, the university has kept its strategic vision on education, science, technology and innovation. Under this vision, the Institute of Oceanography in SJTU was established in 2013, and then transformed to the School of Oceanography in 2018 with the mission goals to conduct basic research in marine science and technology, to seek solutions for environment protection, ecosystem conservation and climate change mitigation, and to serve the public, nation and global communities. The School of Oceanography is a joint venture between Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Ministry of Nature Resources Second Institute of Oceanography and the Ministry of Nature Resources Polar Research Institute of China.
The School of Oceanography offers Bachelor's, Master's and PhD degree programs in marine science. The School currently has around 110 faculty and staff members, and is enrolled approximately 150 and 300 undergraduate and graduate students respectively. It possesses State Key Laboratory of Submarine Geoscience,Key Laboratory of Polar Ecosystem and Climate Change, Ministry of Education ,Shanghai Key Laboratory of Polar Life and Environment Sciences,Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of Polar Science and the Observation and Research Station for Marine Risk and Hazard Management at Daya Bay, Ministry of Natural Resources.
The School has received a number of international research and educational projects in collaboration with institutions around the world, engaging in a wide range of research activities from wetlands to deep ocean trenches, spanning from equatorial to polar regions. The School of Oceanography has been ranked as A+ consistently by Times Higher Education, and Top 3 among Chinese universities in the national ranking. As a young school, the School of Oceanography is steadily advancing towards excellences in education, research and service.

August Cooperation Agreement between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Ministry of Nature Resources was signed.
October School of Oceangraphy was established.
May Marine Science Doctoral Program was approved.
Sep. The enrollment of the first 40 undergraduates embarked.
April Awarded as the First National Platforms for the Combination of Research and Education by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
June Cooperation Agreement between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Polar Researach Institute of China was signed.
Nov. Shanghai Key Laboratory of Polar Life and Environment Sciences and Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of Polar Science were approved.
June Marine Science was accredited as National First Class Undergraduate Major.
Polar Engineering Technology Innovation Center was approved.
Marine Science Post-doctoral Research Station was established.
