海洋学院“院·望”系列讲座预告：Patricia Glibert教授10月16日开讲

Our oceans are changing. Climate change is leading to warming waters, more severe storms, and more acidic waters. Our human footprint compounds these effects, with increased nutrient pollution, hypoxia, and algal blooms. This talk will introduce these changes and how they may be additive or synergistic. Then, using the example of algal blooms from the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, the long-term changes over the past 50 years, and using the example of algal blooms from the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, model projections for algal blooms for the next 50 years will be explored under scenarios of nutrient reduction and climate change. Even aggressive nutrient reductions may not be sufficient to reduce blooms significantly. What are the solutions for reversing course, and does technology provide solutions that are ready and effective, scalable, cost effective, and with minimal secondary environmental risks? By discussing some of the available technical solutions, we may be better able to understand what we can realistically achieve and where efforts may show promise.
